I take Coumadin.

I am currently am taking coumadin for the prevention of DVT's. I have no problems while taking it, but I risk develpoing blood clots without it. Will I be cleared to work while taking this medication?

Thats a question for a physician only. Fortunately for you, as I have mentioned in a previous posting, the Fire Departments Physician does NOT have the final say. You are entitled to appeal and demand other opinions from outside physicians to contest the Fire Depts Medial expert. You should contact Captian Bob for more info.

Each city or county agency has its own medical standards. Interestingly with the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act it may be discriminatory not to hire you because of your meedical condition. I would suggest calling the health department for the city or county for which you would like to work and ask them directly. For example, inquire with the fire agency s to who performs the entry level medical exams for their agency. Once you find out place a phone call to them and ask.
I would also ask your PMD if he or she would be willing to write a letter saying that taking Coumadin would not affect your ability to do the job.
Usually the city (or County) MD that does the medical exam does a cursory exam. If anything comes back unusual they disqualify the candidate. It is up to the individual to fight the disqualification. Enter the letter from your PMD.
Since your PMD is a specialist in the arena, it becomes a battle between the two Docs. The specialist usually wins because he ahs a greater expertise. In addituion fire agencies are uneasy about discriminating against a candidate due to ADA.
'Good luck

Firefighters get lacerated a lot. It seems to me that someone on blood thinners would be particularly at risk.
