Question

I live in Oklahoma City, OK I am 37 and I am a
diebetic and take one pill a day. I am studying for
the written exam in Aug. will I be disqualified
for being a diebetic or should I still go for my
goal to become a firefighter.

Dowdys:

Are you a type II diabetic controlled with medication and diet?

It is just medication and with diet and exercise

Dowdys:

Take a look at NFPA 1500.

My doctor tells me that controlled type II diabetes is NOT a disqualifying factor of and in itself.

Disqualifying factors are those that physically prevent you from doing the job.

So, here is what you do, go find a doctor who does firefighter physicals. Get a physical and discuss the diabetes with him or her.

Get back to us.

Thanks for your help, would you have suggestions
on books for the written test to study with or
any info. that would help me to prepare.

Steve

Dowdys:

Take a look at the SHOP section of PFC. The SHOP section is located in the tool bar at the top of the window.

I suggest you take a look at Chief Paul LePore's books and that you also consider what Captain Bob has to offer. Both Paul and Bob offer you insights you won't get anywhere else. You can also go to your local bookstore and ask for Barron's Firefighter exam study guide. While you may not see exact test questions, those questions you do see will help to put you in the right frame of mind for firefighter exams.

Make sure you use the search function on this website for anything from DMfireschool.
