Question on work schedules

Hi, I'm thinking of becoming a Firefighter and I was wondering what are the work schedules like for the full time job? I hear its works something like 24 hour shifts then a day off or two days of 24 hour shifts and two days off or something like that. I always thought firefighters went to work everyday and went home at night but I read different can someone explain how it works.
