FEMA BASIC PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER COURSE G290

At the conclusion of this basic course, Public Information Officers (PIOs) will have enhanced their basic skills in working with the media and handling interviews. They will also be familiar with the PIO Team concept, skills related to conducting a news conference, the PIO's role in a declared disaster, and how to write a news release.

This course is recommended for relatively new, full-time, public information officers, who have emergency management as a part of their career responsibilities.

Attendees will work with retired CSTI Trainer Frank Cowan and Los Angeles Fire Department PIO Brian Humphrey to sharpen their skills. Key topics include:

- WORKING WITH THE MEDIA
- LEGAL ISSUES
- NEWS INTERVIEWS AND CONFERENCES

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ATTENDANCE: Emergency management personnel, including individuals who either have public information duties as an auxiliary or primary part of their jobs or who are relatively new full-time public information officers who have emergency management as a part of their responsibilities.

NO WORKSHP FEE: This FEMA course is funded by the Emergency Management Performance Grants (EMPG) for California State and local government agencies
(includes the National Guard), schools, and non-profit organizations. Private industry, out-of-state organizations, Native American Tribes, and Federal Government employees are also funded if they are a part of a California local or state government emergency management response/recovery effort.
