CERTIFICATE CHANGE OVER

Has anyone ever transitioned from military firefighter to a city firefighter? I need to know if the city fire departments will accept my NFPA, DOD certificates. I have been in for three years and am comming up on my last year fast, I need to know how it all works. Do I have to take all those certificates over or does the state accept my certs?

Contact your State FM's office. They should be able to tell you.

You don't mention what state you are looking to work in, if you look through the IFSAC and Proboard sites that list the states and what certs are recognized in those states. DoD certs have reciprocity with IFSAC and DoD also recognizes Proboard so often you get both a DoD and / or an IFSAC cert. EMS certs (EMT and Paramedic) are National Registry which most states recognize or have a process to convert it over to the state cert.

Even if a state does not recognize the actual cert they will recognize the training required for that cert and count it towards the state cert requirements. It all depends on the state, the department and the cert.

As an example in California, Proboard Hazmat certs are recognized but none of the other fire certs are, how ever after hire the department can use your FF1 and FF2 towards the requirements for the State FF1 and 2.

Also it sounds like you are coming out of the military, if the state you want to work in does not accept DoD, IFSAC or Proboard certs look at DoD Fire Departments, the certs you got in the military are exactly the same as those used in DoD civilian departments. This could give you a job while you get your state certs, some DoD departments actually use both DoD and state certs which would make it easier. As far as I know all states will allow a DoD Fire chief to sign of state FF1 and 2 when the firefighter meets the requirements.
