or I applied for a part time firefighter position at a combo department in my area. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go introduce myself and let one or more of the guys know that I have applied and if so, who should I introduce myself/ declare my intentions to?

You could go in, introduce yourself and tell them that you would like the opprotunity meet everyone, as you have applied with department and would like the opprotunity to get to know those who you hope to be working with in the near future. Don't try and sugar coat things, they'll see right through you!
